Everything You Need to Know About Gynecomastia aka Male Breasts

Gynecomastia (or male breasts/moobs) has bothered men since ages. Though it remains physically harmless in most cases, it is a matter of great psychological discomfort due to female-like appearance of chest which makes men question their own masculinity. This condition occurs in almost all men at one or all three stages of their life which include infancy (affects are mild and not a matter of concern), during puberty (and early adulthood) and late 50s.

1.     Puberty & Early Adulthood- This is the most common and prone age group. During puberty/early adulthood, it seriously affects men not just psychologically but also their confidence and desire to dress-up in their favourite t-shirt or shirt is marred by the poor shape of their chest. Males at this stage are very severely affected mentally due to their tender age and lose confidence quickly. They feel scared of wearing fitted clothes because such clothes highlight their chest and think they are not “man-enough”. Pubertal gynecomastia usually goes away on its own in 2–3 years so it is recommended to wait till 18 years of age before seeking any treatment, but if it persists above that age, you should definitely consult with a plastic surgeon.

2.     Late 50s- As men grow up, the skin and fat start to sag as the effects of gravity and ageing hit, resulting in old-age gynecomastia. At this stage, loose skin is also involved which becomes even more prominent with obesity.

The first group is the main victim because at this age, boys often are starting to socialize, and male breasts hinder them from doing so confidently. They feel very conscious about their appearance and often shut themselves because they cannot wear fitted clothes as it enhances the appearance of male breasts and sometimes their friends make fun of them for having feminine looking chest. It also triggers them to find ‘solution’ to this problem and sometimes they fall prey to false marketing gimmicks (non-surgical allurements as creams, pills etc. or poor methods of surgery that leave very ugly scar spoiling their chest for life because often they look for ‘cheap’ options as they feel shy to share the issue with their parents so think to afford their treatment on their own). In such situation, if you ask a plastic surgeon, we recommend to wait till you reach 18 years of age, and if gynecomastia stay after that age, get yourself examined by an expert plastic surgeon who specialized in gynecomastia surgery.

Here, the most important thing is that parents should listen and understand this issue seriously. Secondly, anything that claims to reduce or remove male breasts non-surgically is just marketing gimmick because there is no research that supports any of these things, so these things have no scientific base. Lastly, when opting for surgery, look for technique that leaves no visible and obvious scars on chest during gynecomastiacorrection because what is point of correction when ugly looking scars are left behind? While searching for cheap surgery, people often end-up getting trapped by non-plastic surgeons/cosmetic spas etc. who perform open surgery or any other such method is used by them that leave irreversible ugly scars that look even worse than the original condition. So beware to find only experienced plastic surgeon who uses a method that leaves no scarring at any visible part of chest.

The Trans-Nipple removal of gynecomastia is a very innovative and scar-less method to correct male breasts. This is a new approach that produces promising results and has maximum patient satisfaction. I have treated more than 1500 patients with this method.
