Both
men and women undergo liposuction to achieve a variety of different goals. Some
people want to look better in a swimsuit, while others want to find jeans that
fit more comfortably. Liposuction is one of the most commonly performed
cosmetic procedures; as such, chances are you’ve asked yourself the simple
question: “Is Liposuction right for me?” There are misconceptions about
reasons for Liposuction and whether liposuction will produce results
as desired. If you’re considering liposuction, you should be aware of
popular myths and facts about it.
Myth-1: Liposuction can be a
substitute to diet and exercise.
Fact: Liposuction is NOT intended to replace the
routine of healthy diet and regular exercise; in fact it is equally important. Exercise
helps you to tone your overall body, prevents fat deposition in internal organs
(such as intestines, liver, heart etc) and liposuction improves your body’s
shape by removing unwanted fat pockets from localized areas (such as abdomen,
thighs, hips, and arms) that still retain fat in spite of regular exercise. Liposuction
should ideally be used after you’ve established a healthy lifestyle (stable
weight, regular exercise, healthy diet) that you can maintain even after
liposuction. In fact, doing so is essential in maintaining the results of liposuction.
Myth-2: Liposuction is a short-cut to weight loss.
Fact: Liposuction is NOT a short-cut to weight loss. In
fact, it is particularly suited for men and women who are close to their ideal
weight but have isolated, uneven fatty areas on their body that never go away
with exercise or diet. It is not a solution for obese person whose main goal is
significant weight loss.
Myth-3: Liposuction will change your life apart from the
change to your body.
Fact: Make sure you want liposuction for the right
reasons to address as problem area on your body and not just as a quick-fix for
your life’s problems. Liposuction will not “instantly fill you with
confidence,” though it can help with that aspect of your life as long as you
maintain realistic expectations. Liposuction can only alter you physically, and
though you may feel more confident after having the procedure done. If you are
prepared for the fact that your life will not change magically overnight, then
liposuction may be right for you.
Myth-4: Liposuction will cure cellulite or reverse all
the signs of aging on your body.
Fact: Liposuction is not a way to treat loose,
saggy skin or cellulite, which is the wrinkling of skin commonly found on lower
abdomen, arms, buttocks, and thighs. Older patients with reduced skin
elasticity do not often achieve the same results as younger patients, as the
best results are produced when the procedure is performed on firmer, more
elastic skin. People with sagging loose skin may need other procedures with
liposuction to reduce extra skin such as tummy-tuck and arm lift. Liposuction
offers an additional help by removing extra fat from your body and make you
look overall fit.
Myth-5: Liposuction can make you look like models.
Fact: Liposuction cannot make you a different person. It
is basically you get what you come with. People often wish to get an hourglass
figure or six-packs but such things depend on many factors that are beyond your
control like your body structure, inherited traits, genetic predispositions and
life style etc. If you expect to get an improved version of yourself, then
liposuction can be helpful.
