Do Slimming Belts Really Work?

You might have seen many tv anchors shouting their lungs out to make you believe how effective these slimming belts are! They push so hard that you feel like ordering one right away even if you watch them for 4-5 minutes. People often buy them in a desperate attempt to loose extra weight and the question- "will it work?" keeps haunting them. Is it really possible to get slim waist just by wearing this belt? Let's find out.

What they claim-

  • Reduction in inches without exercise
  • Getting you slimmer waist without diet
  • Wearing such belt makes your tummy/waist sweat which means it burns fat
  • Sweating = fast burning fat
  • You can lose significant weight in short time etc. etc.
  • People who tell you positive reviews about them (paid)

Does Sweating burns fat?

Its true that sweating burns fat, but not the sweat that comes from wearing this belt or any such thick/tight cloth or because of heat, sweat does burn fat but when it comes from exercise, not when you chill on sofa wearing this belt! Sweating here symbolizes physical hard work. Its easy to fool people by telling them the wrong meaning of this phrase. You have to sweat overall (by working out your body) to reduce any fat, and loose weight. Also, excessive sweating may reduce some of your water weight which may look like you have lost a few inches, but the real villain (fat) doesn't budge much.

The Truth-

In weight loss industry, slimming belts stand where hair color stands in fashion industry- they appear to be simplest solution but the effectiveness is highly doubtful.

These slimmer belts are made of neoprene that work as a compression (by tightening your waist),  hence you may look slim temporarily. Some of these create vibrations, some create heat and some have little devices attached to adjust the intesity of vibrations/heat- all in the name of burning fat (or just to make these look more convincing!). They appear to be a simple solution to you bulging belly fat. These belts compress our internal parts also, including fat cells so wearing a slimmer belt while working out may make you look like you have lost inches, but your fat cells will return to normal once you decompress (take off the belt). They are basically like the shapers that shrink your body for very short period of time (till you wear them).

Side Effects of Slimming belts-

The top 5 side-effects of using such belts are-

1. Changes in Body Temperature:
These belts are made of neoprene that holds and blocks the heat of your body inside and doesn't let it cool down as much as it naturally should. Longer usage can result in heatstoke and exhaustion, which are major health problems.

2. Affects Skin Condition:
Slimming belts cause your body to perpire more and prevent flow of fresh air circulation around skin  (unbreathable fabric/material) which can lead to itching, skin rashes and blisters.

3. Skin Burns:
Longer usage or direct contact with skin may result in severe skin burns and damage to the skin.

4. Dehydration:
Due to excess perpiration and blocking heat in, these belts cause excessing sweating which can lead to dehydration. Excessive use of these belts can be hazardous.

5. Imbalance in Electrolyte Level:
Users of such belts often complaint about sudden muscle cramps which can be a result of electrolyte imbalance that can occur due to excessinve sweating.

Our Verdict-

These are absolutely pointless products and have zero scientific base. Such things only waste your money and time. Instead you can invest your money and time to some exercise and good dieting regimens that at least have a scientific point to reduce some weight. You should remember no physical exercise = no fat loss. So anything that claims to make you slim without healthy diet & exercise if just playing marketing gimmick. If you find it difficult to start exercising, read about common exercise blockers and how to overcome them.

How to get slim waist?

Nothing can help you if you don't help yourself because you need to understand that there is absolutely no substitute to a healthy lifestyle. There are cosmetic surgical procedures such as liposuction and tummy-tuck that have scientific base that they can remove the stubborn fat and loose skin from outer layer of your abdomen, but if you have fat surrounding your internal organs (intestines, liver etc which is common in over-weight people who don't exercise) then it cannot be removed even with such surgeries. Internal fat needs to be burned out with exercise. There are no short-cuts to healthy lifestyle. So it is best to forget about short-cuts and establish a healthy routine that you can maintain later to be healthy inside and out.
