Smart Tips to Overcome Obesity

Obesity (being excessively or morbidly overweight) is a major problem for a mass population worldwide due to dramatic changes in dietary habits, introduction of junk foods and lack of physical activities. Life is very busy for everyone these day so its easy to look for short-cuts for every task to save time such as choosing elevators over stairs, washing-machine & dish-washer over handwashing, riding vehicles instead of walking or cycling and the list goes on. Technology has surely made our lives easy but it has also encouraged sedentary lifestyle.

We prefer handing our kids TV remote or mobile games after a tiring day of work instead of taking them outside to play. And junk foods are twice culprit for promoting obesity as its convenient to open a bag of chips or order pizza when feeling hungry instead of reaching for an apple or making salad. We often become victim to common exercise blockers and all of our efforts to get healthy and fit are lost. All of these things contribute to obesity that gradually grips you to its claws so that there comes a time that it becomes next to impossible to return to a healthy weight.

So how can you overcome this? You know its not easy, but one step at a time will surely clear your way to a healthy lifestyle and fit body-

1. Do some physical activity each day- This doesn't count the household chores, mind you! You need to start doing something that causes you sweat a lot, something like running, dancing, cycling or skipping rope. These things are easy to start with and can be done anywhere so do your health & body a favour and give your heart some pumping!

Read our smart tips to make exercising fun  & easy to start.

2. Take stairs instead of elevators- Elevators may seem tempting, we know! But it's just another thing to decrease your physical stamina. Remeber you feel tired because you don't have stamina that can be built up by only increasing the level of your physical activities.

3. Take kids to park in evening- Its good for your physical health as well as mental health after a tiring day, and great for your kids' health too. Kids have a lot of energy that should be utilised to better use otherwise childhood obesity is yet another demon to haunt you for life! So its a good idea to take out that badminton or basket ball and go out to play with your kids, or even simple walking/running is also good.

4. Make smart food choices- Choose seasonal fruits such as papaya  watermelon  or exotic fruits such as strawberries, kiwis etc. and dry fruits, nuts  over pizza, pies or pastries. Give preference to homemade drinks such as lassi/chachh/smoothies over soda, packed juices or cafeinated drinks. Eat energy bars instead of chocolates. The bag of chips may look tempting for sure, and its'okay to eat little calories once in a while but be smart to not finish whole packet on your own in a go. Instead, open just one bag and share within group/family and be sure to not make this a daily habit. Also, avoid screen (tv or mobile etc) while you eat, because we often forget how much we ate when we are not focusing.

5. Drink a lot of Water- 8 glasses of water is the least your body needs per day so make sure you fill yourself with water even before you feel thirsty because thirst is a sign of dehydration. Do not drink from bottles, drink from glass and finish one glass everytime. The time when you drink water also has its significance such as drinking one glass before eating is a good habit to control obesity as you will feel full already and will not overeat.

Worried about hanging skin and out of shape body after major weight loss?- During massive weight gain, our skin is stretched beyond its limits that it becomes impossible for our skin to shrink back to its normal and natural position. We often see hanging tummy, flanks, thighs, arms and sagging breasts after major weight loss- all of which is inevitable! Loosing weight is difficult and gettting rid of lose skin is another story. Unfortunatley, when stretched beyond its limits, our skin has structural damage that it has stretch marks, it becomes impossible to return to its actual shape. But thankfully, this can be corrected with body-lift procedures which are tailor-made cosmetic surgeries to help people who have lost major wieght with deit/exercise efforts or bariatric surgery. Body lift includes tummy-tuck (lipo-abdominoplasty), thigh-lift, arm-lift (brachioplasty) and breast-lift (mastopexy) etc. There is a customized solution for everyone. So if you are wondering how to get back in shape after major weight loss, its wise to schedule a consulation with ASPS Borad Certified Plastic Surgeon, and discuss your concerns with him thoroughly, set realistic expectations and then make an informed decision about the procedures you think you might benefit from.
